  • Thanks for your reply, I am not sure what roders are.....
Some of the companies offer half price or even free shipping for orders over $150.00, unfortunately I can't remember which ones so now will have to go through all the many sites again. I was going to order the equivalent of £135.00 and as far as I can tell this will have to include postage. And then pay on delivery the admin charge and VAT......I had a quick look at the customs site and as far as I can tell fabric is a lower rate of VAT.
I make quilts using bright bold fabrics and am now looking at the possibilty of supplying fabrics......but that is a long way away unfortunately!

  • can anyone advise me,

i am going to the USA soon and am looking at buying a mini mac which works out roughly £200 cheaper there. but it looks like i'd have to pay VAT on that which works out about £80 plus buy a new charger which could be up to £40 - though i have seen cheaper on ebay. so only works out £80 cheaper.

    does this sound right?

I recently purchased a jacket from the US, online. It arrived in the UK and I had to pay £24 VAT + 13.50 Parcelforce Clearance Fee.

Now I want to send the jacket back as its not the right size. Does anyone know if I am able to claim the VAT back some way?

PS - how do I post this a new thread! I feel stupid!

  • Hi Guys
I am in the throws of purchasing a limited edition picture costing $5200 from a gallery in the USA. Could someone please confirm to me if this attracts duty and Vat and if so by how much?? I went to the HMRC website and I'm still not sure. It is to be delivered by FeDex. Is this the best way - I obviously would like to know of any money saving tips!!! Thanks in advance for any replies. Thanks for your reply.

Is there anyway that my friend could say that it was my property that I had left in the US whilst holidaying, by mistake and that he was sending it on to me?

If not and I do incur a charge, how much do you imagine it would be for? Do you feel it is still worth importing it or would the charge prove to be so much that it's better off buying in the UK?

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

That only really works for clothes.

    1. Send contraband to friend
    2. Make sure labels/tags are taken off ; washed once, optional
    3. Wrinkled and packed poorly
    4. Note saying "try not to forget your stuff next time!"
    5. ???
    6. Profit (i.e. save loads on luxury goods like Ralph Lauren, not pay fees)
