Housing Executive home - Easy to get?

Brother recently separated from wife and moved out of marital home.
He can't afford to buy any property with the paltry money she gave him to buy him out and can't afford a private rental after he pays child maintenance out of his salary.
He alternates between sleeping at my dads and my house when one of my kids is away at uni and has decided to try for a Housing Executive property. He needs a 3 bedroom house as he has 2 kids (1 each 11 & 9) who will be staying over with him.
Basically we want to know if he has any chance of getting one and will it go against him the fact that he isn't on benefits?

Best advice is to contact the HE as soon as he can. The housing waiting list varies from area to area. He should qualify for emergency housing, but as I'm not an expert this will need to be clarified.

just as an aside - make sure he is talking to a GOOD solicitor - with 2 children he should be paying no more than 20% of his net weekly income as child support, also if he has both children say, 2 nights a week overnight then it becomes 5/7's of 20% of his weekly pay. So for example, if he has £300 a week home with him, he should be paying £42.85 a week in maintenance.
PM me if by any chance he needs the name of a good solicitor for this sort of work.0 -
My brother has been on the waiting list for an executive house for the best part of two years! He is single and has had to resort to a private landlord with the result that he is only £10 a week better off than he would be on benefits!
Surely if he rented somewhere his living costs would have to reflect what he can pay in maintenance, the above post is only too true........tell him to get a good solicitor.0 -
If the children do not live with him permanently he will only be entitled to a one bedroom property.Gone ... or have I?0

You want to know what bugs me genuine people in need cant get a house because of greed. I know two people in Randalstown who sold their houses for over £200,000 each, went running to the HE in antrim crying they were homeless and ended up getting a nice 3 bedroom house with off road parking and nice garden in Neillsbrook in the town each. Im quite open to name and shame as well but dont want the thread closed.
Infact one of the said people drives around on a mobility scooter because they are so ill and cant walk yet after dark can quite easily stagger home from the pub singing and shouting at 1 am, but thats a whole different thread.Well I Love Tv And I Love T. I know, it's rife where I live too. If you make yourself deliberately homeless you aren't officially entitled to a HE house but they must believe what you say on your application without checking.
It's more common to pretend to be a single parent in order to get a house and extra benefits, then move the boyfriend in (without telling of course.) It's very lucrative. However I'm not prepared to tell the powers that be about the cheats so I suppose I should shut up about it!Stercus accidit0 -
Well we have been on a waiting list since 2004, I kid you not..,This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I can well believe that, I know someone who was kicked out of theier home as it was connected to their job. 2 adults and 2 kids homeless, did they get a HE house? Nope, still waiting 3 years later0
