bath seal gap advice and bath lip (tap end) suggestions?

me again!
needing some advice please, am in the process of removing the bath seal (cream strip and gunk) and notice the gap is fairly large.

Once clean, can i just use more sanitary sealant? or do i need to pack it before hand? if so what can i use? anything around the house? The bath top lip slopes - (i am unsure if this is shown in the pics) hence the gap tapers from the bath side and the wall as well.

i do not think there is anything under the lip / edges to stop anything dropping below.

The bath is cast iron, and while it moves very slightly if i pull / tug it seems very solid. I understand i will not need to fill the bath with water when i seal due to this, is that correct?


second question:

also while you're looking at that lovely example of a bathroom any thoughts on what i can do with the 'gap' / over lip at the top end near the taps, to make it look a little nicer?

I have considered to just reseal it and leave that wood in place or
try find some wood that will fit in the gap and try make it level and fill around. I could 'tile' over it with fake tiles? However i do notice if i tug the bath sideways there is a slight noise, i suspect its due to the wood lip 'creaking' from it flexing while being stuck to the bath and wall.

i don't think a raised box / shelf for storage would work and I can't move the bath or get someone in to do the 'proper' thing of having the gap at the other end.

so any thoughts please?

I have just resealed my bath, the previous sealer was a much better quality silicone, but it seems ok at the moment. I just sealed over the top, but the old sealer had dried a long time ago.

Where there are large gaps silicone sealant should not be used to fill them by itself.
Wood will always get wet and is not best to get a good seal.

Plastic strips of the solid variety (rather than honeycomb) are excellent. The can be cut to size, fixed with low modulus silicone sealant and then given a seal finish at the joints with sanitary/mould resistant silicone sealant.

The whole is then waterproof but also a bit flexible to take account of some bath movement.
Best fixed and finished when the Bath half full of water to take some account of the extra movement when actually using the bath.

The plastic edging strips are widely available online and at DIY stores - just make sure it is the solid variety, slightly bigger than the gap and desired colour.
