Some expect you to either have £2000 available on a CREDIT CARD [a debit card with £2000 available to withdraw is not good!!!] or pay £25 a day to reduce the excess.
How many people can say they have a spare £2k on a cc available as you go on holiday???
They make more on the ripoffs/extras than the hire.
Well hopefully most people going on holiday abroad and renting a car should make sure they have a CC available with £2k available if they are choosing a company with such a high deposit.
£2k is a relatively low limit for a CC so shouldn't be a problem for people who are half decent at managing their finances.
Even the companies with the worst reputations will tell you the amount of deposit you need to put down before you book, so it shouldn't be a surprise and people shouldn't be turning up at the desk and not being able to pay it.
Also it's worth pointing out that there are some genuinely good Hire Companies out there who do not try and sell extra insurance.
Two of the best i have used are Sixt which had a relatively competitive price of around £160 for a weeks rental for the car i wanted and never tried to sell any insurance to me on pickup and only said their deposit would be twice the rental price (which they never actually charged to my card).
The best company i have ever used is Autoreisen in the Canary Islands and i got a special off of £36 for a weeks rental of a small car and all their prices include full insurance with no excess plus an additional driver and you simply bring the car back with the same amount of fuel you left it with.0 -

I disagree with most of what you've said [esp about sixt!!].
I'm don't want to get into bickering so I'm happy to agree to disagree.0 -
It did tickle me at Malagarcar when a young couple went ballistic when they couldn't hire for cash. They couldn't grasp that the hire company wanted some security in case something went astray. I don't think they had a spare couple of grand cash with them.
They didn't get a car.0 -
Check if there is a 'refueling' charge and check the full to full or full to empty. Also take a video of the whole of the outside of the car with a date stamp on it and pic of inside if damage is seen.
If you hire cars often it's worth getting an annual policy here for additional costs like undercarriage, tyres etc.0 -
Used them 2 years ago and had no issues.0
