bradford&bingley or Halifax

Hi, hope you can help,

My partner and I are going travelling for 6 months and have £50,000 to put into a savings account while we are away (we will need access to it when we return after 6 months).

There are so many savings accounts around and i'm getting a little confused.

Everybody is raving on about the bradford and bingley internet savings account paying 6.4% gross AER. However, this rate is variable, so surely no sooner will we put the savings in, the rate will drop???

The other option was with Halifax (or any similar set up with another bank) where you invest and the rate is fixed for your term, but this offers a slightly lower interest rate.

Could anybody advise as to what we should do? I was almost going to sign up for b&b until I realised the rate was not fixed for a period of time.

I would appreciate any response.

Thanks.

Karen.
