Battery drain - car with radio on, ignition on & off. New radio wiring
Comments
-
My car's canbus, and had a different stereo fitted before I bought it.
To get the aftermarket one to work correctly, there must have been some jiggery pokery done to the wiring. I believe it is to do with the memory.
This seems to be confirmed by the fuse. The switched live fuse powers the electric windows as well, I can operate my windows at any time, key or not.
The original was fitted again when I bought it, but the switched feed is live all the time.
It hasn't been done behind the stereo, I think it's under the fuse box. The end result is the radio is a constant drain on the battery.0 -

Thanks. No offence there but i wasn't sure what you were saying until i got to the end bit :rotfl:So pretty much i take from what you said that messing about too much with canbus system isn't a good idea and we were right to just leave it as it currently is?
On the plus side, everything does work. It may not work like it did but it works
And that was something i needed to do more of in 2018 ... be more positive :rotfl:0 -

Why not take the car back to the fitters, explaining the issue, and they'll tell you.JustAnotherSaver wrote: »And the correct way would be?
Obvious question but has she attempted to manually switch the radio on with the ignition off?0 -
There are several options available to a competent fitter:JustAnotherSaver wrote: »And the correct way would be?
1. Connect to a fused supply which is always live
2. Connect to a fused supply, live with key in & ignition off
3. Connect to a fused supply, live with ignition on
Having the radio on whilst the engine is not running will drain the battery. If wired correctly your system should detect low battery power level and switch off the radio.
It appears you have not understood your fitters explanation of Cambus"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

What on earth could've possibly brought you to that conclusion?JustAnotherSaver wrote: »To be honest he lost me a bit because i'm certainly an electrical dummy

I've already called him.JustAnotherSaver wrote: »Called the chap who installed it this morning to explain what was going on.
He never said that it couldn't be done but he seemed to be suggesting that with this canbus system on that car things can start going wrong when you're messing around too much with it. He certainly left me with the impression that it's best left as it is before a can of worms is opened up.
