If your frames are 25 years old and still half decent it could be worth getting someone around maybe new hinges and fresh handles might do . some virgin white plastics became grainy around that time and discolour in different stages (the beads or sash could be different that the outerframe ) sometimes a chemical clean with a solvent based cleaner helps . other times with the old gaskets can spread black excess everywhere . New windows I think [wink]

  • Hello Greenface

I would appreciate your advice on my double glazing problem.
I live in a 1930 mid terrace house in London borough of Redbridge, greater London. The original wooden windows are now in a bad state and desperately need replacing. I have had about 10 quotes, mostly ranging from £12k to £26k including the big companies and some smaller over the past year. I cannot trust any of them and feel like I am being ripped off. I have just had to cancel a contract for £10,700 because they refused to give a target installation date, despite a contract clause describing this.

I was Quoted 20k by Crystal in November 2017, they have come back hard selling February prices of £10.500, is thus too much for the following:

    Upvc A rated Windows

2 Bays Windows with the same measurements and each to have 4 openings
    1500 by 700
    1500 x 700
    1500 x 700
    Box bedroom 1420 by 1200, 2 openings
    Back bedroom 1500 x 1800, 3 openings
    Bathroom 1100 by 1800 with 2 openings
Back door 2100 by 900, 1 opening in small panel overhead
Small kitchen window 209 x 680, one opening
    Lounge 1700 by 745
    1700 x 580
    1700 x 580
    French doors 2100 x 1400
    Porch 2400 by 850,
    2400 by 350,
    2400 by 350
    French doors 2100 x 1200

There are 23 smaller panels with leaded lights overhead the windows and porch.
All to have Edwardian lead throughout except bathroom, back bedroom and back door.

    Many thanks
    Mollie

Don't trust the word of someone on the internet either .
can I count 12 windows 2 French 1 back and one poss porch door ? Think your frames are built into sections and the 23 smaller panels are the small fixed or transoms above the bigger pane below . London prices do blow my mind I can be honest and say if I tried to charge the silly prices London can I wouldn't get a days work locally (Merseyside) If white and a lot depends on the around of making good due to different types of taking out . You wouldn't get much back from 8k add your London 50% there's a 12k job . How were you asking the target date installation because its in the best interest for firms to have a sort of date . The jobs ive measured today (feb 6th) i've told the customers the middle of march or a week or two after. but will give them an installation date the first week in march . All depends on a lot of things . weather / over runs . suppliers . one off jobs coming in and I contract for 3 others as well as my own work so a bit of juggling needed . If you said . You can do the job so long as your done by the end of april etc . that gives them a window to do it in but not a "I will be there 17 days after they are measured "etc . Tight schedule to keep & x amount of days to do it . Depending on fit and finish look towards paying 12k tops at londons unique pricing .

Are you coping the leads into Edwardian style or having old ones encapsulated ?

  • Hello Greenface

Many thanks for your advice, most helpful.

Sorry, I know my measurements are confusing.
All the windows Including those smaller panels with leaded lights, have to be replaced.
I have 6 windows in total, all except the bathroom have smaller leaded light panels on top of larger panels and 2 French doors with side panels.

2 bay Windows with 5 square Edwardian lead in large panels and 4 openings
1 box room with 2 square large panels and 2 openings
1 back bedroom with 3 larger panels, 3 openings
1 bathroom window with 3 large panels, 2 openings, but no smaller panels on top
1 small kitchen window, small top panel, one opening in large panel
1 back door with smaller panel opening on top
1 French door in sitting room, with 3 side panels, fully glazed square leads, one opening in smaller top leaded light panel
1 French door with 3 side panels in porch, all fully glazed with square leads, no openings, but leaded lights in 3 smaller panels overhead

We moved 5 years ago, and replaced the front and back door, and 10 mixed sized windows at the following costs (replaced all about a year after we moved)

    2 x composite doors supplied and fitted - £1600

10 x DG windows replaced - £3500-£3600 (cant remember exact figure)

We are on the Herts/Essex border, very impressed with the service we got

glad you have had a good experience . prices have risen to buy doors recently but thats a good price then . 3.5k for 10 frames is still achievable around these parts .
