Jeep Grand Cherokee as daily driver

My partner's dream car is a Jeep Grand Cherokee and we are in a position where we can afford to purchase one - but don't want to get stung with unrealistic running costs after buying.

I've looked at what Jeep claims to be the running costs (mpg etc) of the car, but I'm finding it difficult to find any figures from actual owners of the cars.

Anyone on here have one?

I've tried youtube etc but only seem to be getting American websites. Would be could to see what it's costing people in the UK to run these vehicles.

Any help would be much appreciated.

What age vehicle are you looking at? The Honest John site has a real mpg figure but only for the diesel for the 2011 model

If you're worried about fuel economy it may not be the best choice.

I wouldn't expect more than mid 20's from a diesel and mid to low teens from a petrol.
  • We'd be looking at the 2013 onwards model. Saw an Honest John video on youtube for 2011 model.

We're not expecting a vehicle that does 50+mpg. It's just her dream car, and we'd like to know exactly what we're getting ourselves in for before purchasing.
  • Careful - Jeep have a really bad rep since Fiat took over. Even Yanks are struggling to like their iconic car.

My other question is have you driven one of the American 4x4s? If it is just the image she is in love with and hasn't actually spent time in one, then you may have a disappointment on your hands. Quality is not the same as the premium European brands.

I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

expect 20mpg at best, uninspiring performance, minimal refinement and a lot of wobbling on uneven surfaces and bends.
I took a highish spec one off road and it was great, but I expect it'll be pretty crap on tarmac.

    What's the appeal?
Don't get me wrong; I'd have one, but it'd be a heavy workhorse rather than a dream car.

My neighbours used to have one.

Positives - good for towing the horse box, especially on wet grass.

    Negatives - everything else.

They ditched it for a Freelander.

I suspect that some of the comments on here are referring to pre 2011 models. Post facelift 2013 models really aren't that bad.
