Windows XP won't stay in hibernation

Hi

I hope this isn't a really obvious thing to put right:o but if it is I apologise for wasting your time. I'm sure someone will know what to do.

I have a fairly new HP desktop computer with Windows XP as my OS. I've installed all the windows updates and in general everything is working fine except the fact that it won't stay in hibernation.

I'm on Broadband but don't want things on view all day and it's a faff to keep turning the computer on and off all the time. When I click on Standby (with the Shift key depressed) I get the message that it is going into hibernation, and indeed it does, the screen goes black and the 'engine' stops. For about 20 seconds that is and then the whole thing springs back to life again right from the first screen that comes up whenever the computer is first switched on.

I know this isn't a major problem and I can live with it but I'd find it a lot more convenient if I could fix it! The hibernation facility did work very occasionally when I first bought the computer but didn't after the first couple of weeks.

All help gratefully received.
Thanks
Imp

  • HAve you checked the Hibernation facility is turned on on your PC, to do this goto the control panel power options, hibernate tab
Bug? That's not a bug, that's an undocumented feature.
  • This can be tricky to investigate. See How to troubleshoot hibernation and standby issues in Windows XP.
Start - Run - type eventvwr.msc - OK, and look for errors or warnings around the time of hibernation.

Thanks Colin. have checked that and it's fine.

    Thanks for the link Chippy_Minton.

I'd already investigated a lot of the possibilities listed in the linked pages prior to starting this thread. Have now been through them all again and according to that everything seems to be OK so I'm baffled!

Have also begun to try the second of your suggestions but haven't had the time so far to investigate fully. Will get onto that as soon as I've cooked dinner and we've eaten....my brain may be fully in gear by then!

Will let you know how I get on.
    Thanks again
