What can I do with panetone?

Options
Hi all! Just wondered if anyone has any ideas what I can do with a panetone (think thats how you spell it!) apart from eating it on it own. My husband works for an italian company and every christmas gets a very large panetone (the size of a football!) and some italian biscuits - thats very nice but we get a bit fed up eating the panetone after a while!! I even take some into my work for my colleagues to eat at teabreak time but still there is always some left. The birds who come into our garden even enjoy the leftovers once we have had enough!! I am sure there could be something else that we could use it for so any suggestions would be gratefully received !! :T

I have used it for a trifle base.
Made a nice change from swiss roll or trifle sponges.

As already said it makes a great trifle and it's lovely toasted too!
My second favorite household chore is ironing. My first being, hitting my head on the top bunk bed until I faint.

I saw on a cookery programme slices of pannetone sandwiched together with grated chocolate and heates on a griddle pan so chocolate melted. Looked blooming lovely.

I know what you mean about panettone..... it seems to last for ages. I find that one way of using up some of the slices quickly is to use it to make eggy bread..... totally addictive... especially sprinkled with icing sugar and cinammon .... yum

  • I saw the same programme as Skintlass and tried it out. It was indeed "Blooming lovely". I think the programme was "Nigel Slater's Real Food".

Anyway, I've also tried adding nice ripe banana to the chocolate between the Panatone slices and that too is fab.

I second Bread and Butter pudding. I saw Gino the italian chef (cant remember his surname) make it on uk food last year and thought it looked fantastic. Think might try and make this for us at Xmas.

Also really like the idea of the chocolate between 2 slices.

Edited to say - sorry bloomin thanks button isnt working for me.
