Cooking odour coming into our spare bedroom from neighbours

Hi All,

Looking for some advice.

We live in a 1950,s semi detached house. Next door neighbours a few years back had some major building work done which means that they now have a large open plan kitchen diner space in their house.

Since then / a similar time ( never had the issue before then and before current neighbours moved in) we have noticed cooking smells in our upstairs middle bedroom which is adjacent and above their kitchen diner area. It relates to their cooking times as they don’t always cook at home ( go to parents across the road) but when they do there is always a smell.

I have been round to mention the issue, and neighbours commented that they don,t always use extractor fan when cooking and only open a window as “ doesn’t think extractor works well”

I noticed that they have spot lights in their “ new” ceiling and wondered if the odour could be getting into the ceiling void through these? Do they need to be sealed units/? When installed? Is this something that needs to be checked during building work by build8ng inspector? Building control?

The only other option could be a gap in the party wall? Under floor boards where homes connect - in combination with odours getting into ceiling void. But I can’t see anything? Could the smell get through the brickwork or motar?

Anyone had the same issue? Is there anything I can do/ should do?

I have mentioned to the neighbours but will do again. Surely in normal construction this should not be occurring

Do I need to speak to the council? Or a building surveyor? Could it be the spot lights?

I can’t get the neighbour to change / stop cooking but don’t want to suffer.

We plan for our toddler to move to that room soon so need to sort. Also our airing cupboard in in the room too - so all our clothes etc often smell like stir fry !

Any help is appreciated need a solution
