Ideal aspect for garden when buying a house

Hi - I'm looking to buy a new property but south facing gardens are in short supply at the moment. Can anyone advise what teh next best 2-3 options would be. I want to be able to enjoy the sunshine when it's there ! :-)

  • Depends on whether you want morning or evening sun! Personally my second choice would be west to get the afternoon and evening rays

Yup, my ideal would be south west for those evening rays.
"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.

If you can't get South, I'd get West...

East-facing, you get the morning sun - but in summer that can be blaring bright sunshine at 5am and nothing when you get home from work...

North-facing, you never get any real sunshine at all (in this country!).

West or South West definitely, especially is the living area is at the back of the house overlooking the garden. This way it doesn't get too over-heated in Summer, and you may get nice sunsets to look at. Oh, and lots bof afternoon/early evening sunshine for barbeques etc.

Agreed, ours is S at the moment, and after Aug/Sep, starts to lose the sun in the evenings. My four choices would be SW, S, W and so big it doesn't matter.

My garden is West facing and it's perfect for me. Seem to get the sun slightly later in the day, but not so it's an issue. Our garden is 75ft, not sure if that makes a difference.

  • It's worth bearing in mind that if you have a north facing garden, you need only walk to the far end of it, turn around and you are facing south!

Of course, it depends on the length of the garden compared with the height of the house, but a N-facing garden need not mean you get no sun.

She makes a good point, but I've never had a big enough garden for this to work! :p

south facing will bleach your curtains, paintwork and fade the carpets as sun strems in , west is best.....
my bark is worse than my bite!!!!!!!!
  • Last house, south facing - really hot and needed shade to avoid burning!
This house, north facing - miserable except in June when the sun hits half the garden over the roof. I would agree with west or soothwest.
