We live in Brighton which has excellent transport links to London (55mins on the train), great shops, places to eat out and always plenty to do. Its the best of both worlds as you have the beach and the South Downs is literally a 10 minute drive away.

If Brighton is too busy there are lots of other quieter places along the coast near Brighton such as Shoreham which is a lovely little town.

I live in Worthing, after being brought up in London. I'm 41, don't know what age has to do with it but thought I'd just mention it! :D I wouldn't live anywhere else. It's large enough to have plenty to do (pop. 100k), but nowhere near as busy as Brighton, but its lovely to have Brighton just up the road. I have the coast and the South Downs right on my doorstep and London only 1hr 10mins on the train. OH who is 30, moved in with me after living on the outskirts of London his whole life and just loves it down here.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. :)

Oh, I have saved an absolute fortune from not having to pay the special London Tax...That being the constant stream of dubious parking tickets and traffic contraventions from TfL.

I'm probably inviting something now but I have not received anything since I've been living out here! My favourite one in London was when I got a parking ticket at 4am and was subsequently towed away at 6am in an otherwise deserted street.

  • We moved to South Wales from the Midlands nearly 20 years ago and cannot imagine ever going back, like many have pointed out transport is a big issue and public transport round here is not a viable every day option.
Plus points is the peace and quiet and lack of traffic, in the Midlands my 10 mile journey to work used to take 30 awful stress filled minutes, here i travel 35 miles through mountains and past rivers in the same time and arrive at work calm and relaxed.
Family are only 90 minutes away and the big city (Hereford !) 45 mins away.

how about doing a house swap to a few different areas?

we live on the coast in Kent, easy to get to London, bigger shops in Canterbury, lots of country around and the sea.

I think its important to be able to walk to local shops, ie butchers, general shop, post office etc.

we are fortunate that we found a wonderful area with great people for neighbours
