Afternoon all,
I was looking for some free web filtering software to install on a laptop that i intend my daughter to use.
(She is 7)

I was looking for Microsoft family Safety but this has been discontinued and any links for it that i can find dont work.

Does anyone use something similar they could recommend ?
Im aware i could set this up on my router but the laptop will be used elsewhere also

TIA

When my girls were younger I used to use K9 Web Protect on their laptops. It worked well, had an Admin function and (as I remember) you could remote login over the network to check the logs and change configs. No idea if it's still available.
  • Norton have their own DNS servers that are free to use. There are three options: one that just blocks security threats, one that adds xxx content and one that also adds anything adult (eg gambling).

Really easy to set up, and no software to install.

    Norton ConnectSafe
  • Highly recommend OpenDNS - for at home use. Is your daughter likely to use the laptop away from home (and for you to want the same settings applied)? If so, you would need a local application installed. Certin AV packages offer this feature.

I was going to mention about OPENDNS as well. Well, it is possible for your smart daughter to hack the dns setting easily... ;)

Andy cannot you set the wifi adaptor to use dhcp only for ip address and set a DNS of your choice as stated above, and make sure that her user is just a general user ? However DNS is not the be all and end all, and install a restricted HOSTs file, but then as I said DNS is not the be all

Thanks for the replies guys :)

The laptop will be used in different locals so DNS isn't an option
I have installed K9 (Thanks Doam) and it's just what I was looking for

    Thanks again everyone :)

yes Toshi - she is already a little hacker in the making :)

^^ Yes of course I'm sorry, I was posting as I was leaving work and thinking of DNS at router level !! (rushing AGAIN :( )

I wanted a software application solution and the K9 one was EXACTLY what I was looking for.
To anyone from the future reading this thread, I highly recommend it for your adult content restricting needs :)

And in true spirit of this site - its free :)

Then you may want to have K9/OpenDNS multiple protection. :T
Sorry, I didn't mention about dynamic IP address application. (Also, Android /iOS apps as well.)

You could still give the child their own limited-rights login to Windows and link this to Microsoft Family - https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/12413/microsoft-account-what-is-family
