No sound on Netflix thru sound bar

i have a panasonic smart tv and have just bought a cheap soundbar (£60), i'm happy with it but could do with some help.
its a jvc TH-W513B and i have connected it with an optical lead direct to my tv.
every sky channel plays thru the soundbar fine (setting the source to optical on the bar), my android box plays thru the soundbar fine as well, the problem is.....

when i select my Netflix app on the panasonic smart tv app built into the tv, i get no sound at all. if i turn the volume back up on the tv's speakers sound comes thru them but nothing at all from the soundbar and i cannot work out why. am i just being dumb and missing something obvious?

many thanks

Not familiar with the TV, but have you tried going in to the menu and changing the sound output from tv speakers to optical?

It might be defaulting as you are using a different source for your visuals, I can play my tv sound through my phone instead of using headphones, but after switching that off it defaults to TV speakers instead of the amp, so might be similar to what yours is doing

Use netflix on your android box where it might actually be updated?

I have a similar issue and would be interested in the solution. Sound from my Now TV and Firestick comes via TV rather than through my sound system.

You might want to try HDMI rather than optical connection.

  • I would be looking at forcing the output via Optical by a setting on the TV. I have a Sony that's a few years old now, and its an option buried within its menus to select optical for output (that from memory, only appears when a TOS is plugged in). The downside to this approach is that the output is _only_ via optical, so we always have to have the sound bar turned on, or go back through the labyrinthine menus to switch to TV speakers.

thanks for suggestion, but having gone thru the menus there doesn't appear to be one on the tv that allows the option of changing the output to optical?
the tv model number is: TX-50CX680B

    many thanks.
