  • The big four banks see the counter service as a cost and have virtually no interest in seeing it as a service.

    The simple reason why they are starting to refuse to change coins for non-customers is that they make no money from doing so.

    They are looking to get customers to use the automated machines in order to take staff off the counters and get them selling to customers.

    2 reasons:

    First, to make sure the customer actually has an account, and make sure they're being charged the right amount (ie. business banking customers probably get charged for paying in change).

    Second, and more important, it provides an audit trail. If the change turns out to be wrong at the end of the day, it's essential to know who paid it in so the error can be corrected.
