Scrapping Car- Scrapyard will keep Whole of the V5 (not give any part back) -Normal??

When enquiring for a scrap yard to take in a car, they will take it in with these guidelines.

* Payment per tonne, will be paid to the vehicle owners bank account/bank transfer
(the rate paid, would be rate £ per tone) as an electronic transfer

* They issue the certificate of destruction then and there (they process this there do it on the computer online while you wait)

* They keep the whole of the v5, and they process it themselves (they don't give any of the v5 logbook back to you)

The questions:
Is the fact that they keep the whole of the v5 log book (and not give any of it back to us) normal??
I thought they keep one part, and we keep one part, to send off to the DVLA?

Is this anything to worry about?


and the 'rate per tone' how is this determined?
how can it be shown that the one they offer us is the actual rate? (so they don't underpay us, and pay us less for example)

Have you scrapped a car with a dismantle company and have them keep the whole of the v5 form ?

ringing up prior they will quote the price paid as they knowc the tonnage of your vehicle

I had one collected last year (recycle lives - preston) , cash was in my account 3-4 days later , that car was collected

from memory I w2as given a recept for the car by the recovery driver and a cikrtificate (pdf) was sent to me same day by email

[FONT=Verdana, sans-serif]No idea, they are an Authorised Treatment Facility so it is legal to scrap the car there.

[/FONT] [FONT=Verdana, sans-serif]Whether you give them the whole V5 or not as long as you notify DVLA online you have scrapped the car and they were the ATF I can't see a problem.

If your driving it to them they will probably put it on a weighbridge

They will give you a Certificate of Destruction, which you should keep in case of any problems. As an Authorised Treatment Facility the issue of a CoD will also update the DVLA record online through their linked system. You can also notify DVLA online that you have disposed of the vehicle for a belts and braces approach.

The rate will be whatever they say it is, which they will decide based on the current price of scrap steel.

You could watch them weighing the car if you really want to. Alternatively, the owner's manual or other documentation may give the unladen weight of your car, which should be reasonably close.

Given that you'll only get a few (tens of) pounds, it's not likely to be worth quibbling over the odd pound weight here or there.

If you're really worried make sure you note down the V5 document ref numbers before you take it then you can double check it's been scrapped on the gov site when you get back.

Plenty of scrappers out there who will say it's scrapped but your car ends up back on the road as a cheap temp semi legit runabout still under your name.

AS long as you have the certificate of destruction you're ok.

When phoning around for prices, ask for the price they pay and also ask if there are any deductions.
Some will pay £100 per tonne but with £30 standard deduction. This is for disposal of oils, antifreeze, tyres etc.
Some will pay £50 per tonne with no deductions
