How do I get an "offline" card with Nationwide?

I opened a FlexDirect account with Nationwide mainly for the in-credit interest of up to £2,500.

The card they sent me begins 4751 40 and appears to be an "all auth" card which connects to the bank at every transaction.

How do I get the "offline" card with Nationwide? I have an account at Barclays with a card beginning 4659 01 which is offline, so if I qualify for that then why not Nationwide?

Go into the branch and ask. They’ll either say yes, or no. Life doesn’t get any more simple than that.

Visa were aiming to move all transactions 'online' by the end of 2017. Judging by all my recent contactless transactions (small and large retailers) coming off the available balance immediately, I would say this has been successful.

My Nationwide debit card also starts 4751 40, but it works in 'pay at pump', so I wouldn't worry about that.

Mine is 4751 44 and had it since 2014, not sure if that makes a difference.

Just ring up and ask that saves a branch visit, different banks have different risk profiles.

It's not your card that is "online" its the POS terminal. To cut fraud the industry has moved the majority of transactions in particular contactless to full auth so they require contact with the bank for each transaction.

I have a tsb debit card and it was definitely offline, it used to go straight through in Mc Donald's, the same card authorises every time now that I use it and I can see the transaction in my online banking straight away.

Thanks for that, I suspected something like that happened recently as I have noticed my card taking much longer to authorise for even small sub £10 transactions on card machines which are connected to a dialup line. Previously it would have pretty much been instantly authorised.
It's a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut approach to force all transactions online regardless of amount - surely a floor limit of say £10 would have sufficed, meaning smaller transactions will go through without such delay.
