My wife reckons is peculiarly British. Maybe because the age of the car is displayed on the number plate.
Yep - there are some people to whom that really matters. And hence others who buy a non-dated reg to disguise the age of the vehicle for a few years. Not necessarily a British thing though - I know Americans who have to be seen to have the newest model (an idea which was of course encouraged by US carmakers doing a styling facelift every year or two)
I need to think of something new here...

My old workmates regularly drove £80-90-100k cars, funnily enough only the blokes though.

At the health club I go to the blokes often boast about their latest motor. Invariably they then talk about the traffic as the health club is situated in town where the roads are gridlocked. They sit in the sauna waiting for the traffic to go down.
I don't get stuck in traffic as I fly past it all on my bicycle. I sometimes wonder whether to suggest a bicycle would be better than their motor but decided they wouldn't want my advice.
Yesterday they were talking about going out for some beers. A new bloke said how one of them was really lucky as they lived on a bus route which they could use to go into town drinking.
"A bus, a bloody BUS I haven't been on a bus for 20 years and I'm not starting now." It will take a lot to separate men from their motors even when their are better alternatives.

How were they proposing getting home then?

Blimey, those health clubs cost a packet! Health club or retire early?

Certainly true. Just using up the rest of the back of my fag packet would indicate that Health Club membership for the whole of my working life would result in retirement 3 months later.

Haven't time to read the whole thread, so apologies if this has been mentioned but what about cars that are still prestigious but are going up in value?

I think the thread had only considered the "buy new, run for three years and repeat" type of idea.

However its a fair point. Quite a few Porsche owners can have little or no depreciation on a new car if they get the right car at the right time.

Focus RS usually falls in to that category too (and did for a while when the latest incarnation came out)

Ford Mustang would be another depreciation buster.

Golf GTI Edition 40 springs to mind too.

Hard to do on a new car but not wholly impossible.

Has the OP thrown some figures out to chuck into the mixing bowl, a GT3 RS is a good starting point ;)

    Or a Cayman GT4...
  • Ah the collectable car fallacy. See how much they appreciate when you drive them for 20k miles a year.
