Certainly take the gold to a jewellers, I would avoid the big high street names and use a smaller business. I recently sold a bunch of my gold and was given a value of £375 at H Samuel, and nearly £600 at a small jewellers. Doesn’t hurt to get a value and find out what you’ve got.:cool:If you want to do something, you will find a way.If you don't, then you will find an excuse...:cool:0

Thank you for all your advice. I did contact my local auction house and was going to pop in there but, given what trailingspouse said, I think I'd prefer to contact a small local jeweller. I'll keep you updated.
Thank you.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -
If you do gave some gold have a look on the Hatton Garden Metals thread,
I have used them on several occasions and they pay a lot more than high street jewellers ,
I also sent what I thought was 9ct and they told me it was 18ct and paid out on that,
when they recieve the jewellery they normally pay the same day ,
hope this helps,

“ If they're not hallmarked the auction house will only be able to list them as 'yellow metal' with a consequent reduction in value.

Foreign made gold jewellery won't have a recognisable hallmark either. I have a couple of heavy 24K gold chains from Saudi, which are just stamped '24K' When I took one into our local jewellers to have the clasp repaired they initially refused on the grounds that 'they didn't mend costume jewellery'.0 -

Thank you.
I would take them to the auction house too - get a view from both. You can always set a minimum price at auction so it doesn't sell for less than its lower limit. Lots of dealers buy at auction so will know what they are looking at regardless of the description.0 -
Before you sell it all did your late mother in law have any grandchildren who may attach more sentimental value to a piece of granny's jewellery than yourselves.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0
