First time buyer and credit score

Hi, was wondering if anyone could help me please.

Me and my partner have been saving for a deposit for our first house, I am hoping to start looking around November time. However, I checked my credit score last night and my score is fair 836.

I've never had any credit cards, gone into my overdraft or missed a payment on anything. I have direct debits for my car finance, phone, car insurance etc.

I am just starting to worry now that my credit score is going to affect buying a first house. Does anyone know why it is low or how I can improve? Thank you for all your help x

Please ignore the score. It is just a computer algorithm that lenders don’t see. Only you and Experian see it.

What matters is the content in the report.

Check every account and ensure it is correct.

Also register with clearscore and Noddle and check those reports too. They are completely free to join and will give you monthly access to Equifax and Call Crefit reports. There are 3 major credit reference angencies and you need to check any data being recorded is correct.

I've never had any credit cards, gone into my overdraft or missed a payment on anything. I have direct debits for my car finance, phone, car insurance etc. So you will have some credit history, that will help. It might be worth applying for a CC and using/paying in full each month the thicken your file.

I am just starting to worry now that my credit score is going to affect buying a first house. Does anyone know why it is low or how I can improve? You do not have a 'credit score', only a credit history. And trying to improve the randomly generated number that any of the CRA's assign to you is both farcical and pointless.

Thank you for all your help x

Just keep running your finances properly and you will be fine. I find the advert that claims 'better scores better deals' highly entertaining but the real world doesn't work that way :-)
