These pesky New Years Resolutions - to tidy up my accumulated photos.

I think my two qustions are, is Google Photo safe & how do I start?
I really do not want my family snaps being hijacked for an advertising campagin, nor to loose rights over them & I gather GP is pure (free) storage with bonus search & edit features - which strikes me as wonderful, But Where's The Catch?
I also foresee a time where I need to upload a lot of photos as Executor.

Your experiences & advice please - should I embrace this tech or is John C Dvorak right & I'm better off with a portable hard drive?

You are better off with both options.

If your data doesnt exist in at least 3 places, then it doesnt exist atall.

I'm another one who swears by Google photos.

From memory, the free high quality backup stores pictures at 16 megapixels so is more than enough for most people.

The search is fantastic and sometimes the enhancements it offers automatically can be quite good (just a shame that you can't pick and choose what enhancements to apply yourself).

    You can.

open the photo you want to enhance on the web.

Click on the 3 bars top right

Click on 3 bars again for more editing for light, colour & pop (contrast)

the pros of having google photos far outweigh any cons you may be thinking about. still don't know how when i search 'vulcan' it comes up with my photos/video of the vulcans last fly past as i don't label any photos and don't think i shared on social media.

google photos has taken one step back though recently with its back up and sync app (you will need to download to pc if you want to auto upload the contents of a folder on pc) as you can no longer sync to a network folder. hope google sort this soon as i used to be able to sync my 'memories' folder on nas

I'm curious if you can add text to images in Google Photos.

    No not in google photos
  • I swear by Google Photos too and yes it's absolutely safe assuming that you're generally safe with your security and passwords anyway.
  • I prefer Amazon Cloud Photos. As long as you are a Prime member you get unlimited photo storage. No compression.. It's also a lot easier to manage than Google, I find.

It's a pain in the !!!! to download your photos again once they're in Google. Not impossible, but time consuming.

Once the initial upload is done for your back catalogue, it's very easy to use and run via the app.
I find it automatically backs up without me opening the app about 75% of the time*, so I do make sure to open the app from time to time to force it to upload anything it hasn't already.
*That may be due to my rather old Android version!
