Funding further study at Uni of Notts?

Hi all,

I am currently in my final year studying for BA (Hons) English. I have given it a lot of thought and would like to continue studying. I have found a course I am interested in and am about to apply, my question is about funding...

I know I will have to fund my MA myself, it's an MA in American Literature and I know I have no hope of getting a grant from anyone etc! The thing is, if i do an MA, I will want to go on and complete a PhD with a view to qualifying as a lecturer of English - is there any funding available at PhD level? I can manage to fund the MA myself - just not so confident about finding the three years worth of money for a PhD

Any help much appreciated!! Also, does anyone know if University of Nottingham is competitive for postgraduate places? My lecturer seems to think I'd have no problem getting onto the course I want but it all seems a bit too good to be true :o

Thanks all,

Sarah xx

if you're paying for yourself you should usually be able to get onto a masters with anything from a 2:2 upwards. as far as phds go, you will need to ask at the department about what opportunities they have. they may have a few available each year and you would have to apply and get interviewed etc. otherwise.

don't know much about arts funding, but the AHRC will be a good place to start:

I agree with #2. Be aware that many PhD students get funded under the 1 plus 3 scheme, which means they are funded for an MA followed by a PhD. So apply for this, and if you are lucky you might get your MA funded as well. Obviously, once you have paid for your own MA it is too late to get this funding stream.

At one time the research councils encouraged you to do your PhD somewhere different from your BA, and so would reduce your chance of funding if you were applying to stay in the same place. Check whether this policy still applies, and if it does then explore other universities.
