Ceiling extractor hood turning on and off?

My ceiling extractor fan above the hob has suddenly started turning itself on and off. It comes on for about a second and then seems to lose power then come back on again, and then off, and on again etc.
I thought it was a poltergeist! Does anyone know what might be causing this?
