dehumidifier and timer/sensor

Howdy!
i have an ebac dehumidifier for a few weeks now and am very happy with it. It seems to have stabilised over last couple of days when i empty container every two days instead of daily. all good.
A friend of mine who recommended the unit says i should get a plug in timer for it. I did this and plugged unit in, reset the plug and the dehumidifier didn't operate at all.
I think the reason is, is because the dehumidifier cancelled out the plug as it has its own built in timer.
my friend says i should return it as its not a timer but a sensor.
He also thinks I'm throwing money away and should return the plug.
so, my questions: Is the plug faulty?
Am I wasting money by not having a timer?
Is the timer on my dehumidifier adequate?
I say, if its not broken , don't fix it. Plus , I think that my dehumidifier is overriding the plug.
Advice please:)

Still unsure . I was wondering if it’s best to ignore the plug and leave the dehumidifier as is if it’s working .
Do they use up much electricity ?0 -
I'd leave it set to turn on when it needs to based on the humidity. They use a reasonable amount when in action, but it's unlikely to use much when idling.0

Thanks for that . I have it on the smart setting and just leave it .0
