Halifax have taken money out of a closed account

Hi all, I wonder if anyone else has had a similar problem to me and can offer any advice...

I received a statement yesterday on a Halifax One card that I closed in March. £29 has been debited from this card for a card protection scheme (one of those yearly subscription ones). When I called Halifax to ask how on earth they could apparently re-open my account and take money off it all she could say was that it was in their terms and conditions that because it was a subscription they had the power to do this.

Now I don't doubt that it is in their T&C's, but is this legal for Halifax to effectively open a closed account to take money?

It happens all the time... its up to you to cancel the recurrring credit with the card protection company.
  • A credit card account is never closed it is just dormant.

It is becoming a recurring theme on this board. However, if you did not have the card then I would imagine the insurance should be invalidated and they should issue a refund back to the card, and the bank should take off any interest. You will need to contact the card protection company, and dont be put off if they say "you were covered for x amount of time so you owe us the money", I am pretty sure it will be in the T&C's for the card protection insurance that you must have an open card account to insure, otherwise there is no point to it.Hope this helps.James

    James,

Since this kind of 'protection' usually covers any number of credit cards, debit cards, driving licence and passport loss, etc, I'm pretty sure the OP has had some form of ongoing 'protection'.

I'm absolutely shocked!! If you just were't using the card, I would expect that, but if you actually closed this

I myself would have very serious words with Halifax. i have you tried putting this in writing? I know you say they told you it was in T&C's, but surely this agrrement ended. Fullstop.

If I were you I'd go to a higher authority about this and see if they can help you get you money back from Halifax. It is totally wrong! Surely in T&C's it also says something along the lines of "unless the agreement is cancelled/closed".

As above, it is a recurring transaction and it is up to the OP to cancel with any company with whom they deal.
Although I do believe that people should be made aware that this may happen

  • Halifx dont owe you a penny. You set up an agreement with the insurance compnay for them to take that money from your nominated card, which is the halifax. You should have cancelled your insurance and then they wouldn't have taken the money. the halifax have done no wrong, they are obliged to authorise the reoccuring payment until YOU CANCEL IT.
