my bathroom is very small, its like an l shape i have the bath one side and the toilet and sink cramped together on the other along with the radiator right next to the toilet! behind the toilet and sink is alot of black stuff on the walls im guessing its damp unless it could be something else.i only realised i had this when i stripped the walls ready to re decorate but dont want to do it untill the black stuff has gone.the walls seem to crumble very easily.we have a vent in there which when you switch the light on automatically starts.the radiator is hardly on in there as id rather not burn while im on the loo lol. and we do most of the time leave the window open.
what could this be and how to i solve it or stop it happening.thanks in advance

Hiya. A question first, if you don't mind... Is the black mould uniformly dark or more like spots of black?
It could be condensation from the toilet / cystern or could be a leak in a pipe in the wall... You'll need to figure this out before continuing your decorating...
Is the wall an external one?Still waiting for Dyson to bring out a ride-on hoover...Memberships:

Have you spoken to Housing Association?
"Repairs & Maintenance
Looking after your home is a joint responsibility. [Local Housing Association name deleted by poster] is responsible for most repairs to your home. It is your responsibility to tell us when repairs are needed and you must allow access for the work to be done."Still waiting for Dyson to bring out a ride-on hoover...Memberships:

If you find out you are responsible, I would suggest buying yourself an anti-mould spray which contains chemicals to kill the spores - then use watered down PVA adhesive on the walls to seal the walls (after you have filled, etc), allow to dry and then redecorate.
I would also suggest checking out the fan and removing any dust from it to ensure it can work well.
It might be worth you considering getting hold of a dehumidifier (check out freecycle to see if anyone has one to give away).
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Does alot of condensation form on the outside of the toilet cistern?
The reason i ask is that our toilet cistern is fed by mains pressure cold water which is colder than if it were fed from the cold water tank in the loft. And so the toilet cistern gets dripping wet on the outside with condensation - dripping down onto the carpet below making it go black. I've heard that you can get insulation to fit inside the cistern to reduce the condensation on the outside though i've never actually found where you can buy it! I've seen suggestions of making your own though!
I've also heard of a tray that you can attach below the cistern to catch the condensation.

its been like it behind the toilet and sink since i moved in 13m ago..i wallpapered over it once then now ive stripped it its still the same obviosuly lol. i am using a water saving bag in the toilet so dont know if the toilet has anything to do with it. i dont know if the sink has anything to do with it either..all i do know is where the tap pipes are behind the the sink are all uncovered round the back.:j proud to be dealing with my debt:j
