My laptop a Lenovo 310 Windows 10 keeps restarting randomly for updates. Done this about 3-4 times in the past 2 months and always happens when I'm in the middle of writing reports. Thus rather annoying.
I have been through settings and set active hours in the Windows update menu from 10am to 10pm - but it still happens. tried changing some setting in the windows folder i read online - did not stop it restarting for updates a few days ago.
Any advice welcome as I have lost some work a few times because of this ( i now save almost every 5 minutes!)

Hi,
Have you checked your Restart options ?
so under Windows Update, click Restart Options and set reminder to ON. This will notify you when the machine is ready to re-start and complete the update process. You can then defer the restart and or save your work as required before re-starting.
You can also Defer or Pause updates - go to Advanced options (under Windows Update) and you will options in this area.
If you are using Office, in fact most programms these days there will usually be an option to save automatically (saving you the hassle).0 -
It the machine is not on 24/7 it misses the update times etc. So it will just force an update as it cannot update when it wants.
So your choices are:
1. Leave it on at night, plugged in and not set to sleep on power
2. Put up with it.
3. Turn off updates.0 -

I have restart/auto update disabled under control panel, admin tools, services, windows update.
But my laptop restarted without warning an hour ago. After the restart, i check windows update screen and it reports no updates for today. So i wonder if its a Lenovo update and restart?0 -
Blocked updates on my main PC. I have an Android/Windows 10 tablet and i left that untouched. Mistake it seems.
Started an update with just 12% battery life left. Looks like i maybe blocking the updates on that.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
The only way I've found to stop windows update from occurring is to stop the service (via services.msc)
On my main Windows 10 machine the updates wake the machine from sleep in the early hours, apply the update, but don't put the machine back to sleep. It's a bug that's been present since day 1 of Windows 10 and they've never bothered to fix it.
Pretty annoying and energy-wasting as all the lights, speakers etc are set to switch on when the PC wakes.0 -
mutley74, is this actually anything to do with Updates?
I have mine set to notify me but it never does. In any event, I have only had two updates recorded as having been installed since 1 Jan (on 6th and 10th) but it's restarted at least three or four times.
The last time was when I clicked on a link - I was using the MSE Forum in Chrome at the time. Last time was also when I clicked on a link in Chrome but I can't recall what site I was on.
Does that ring any bells with you?0 -
Apart from emergency fixes, Microsoft release updates on the 2nd Tuesday of the month so leave your PC/laptop turned on that night and it should get the updates, install and reboot while you're tucked in. Simples0
