Questions about moving to the UK (rent)

Hello,
I'm considering moving to the UK in about 3 months (from France) but I don't have any preference regarding where.

Basically what I need is a cheap silent studio (to rent) in a safe environement with a great internet connection. It can be really small, like 15 meters square, however I want to live alone.

I know the UK (particularly England) can be quite expensive, so knowing I don't care where I live what part of the UK would it be best to move to? (and specifically what towns if possible)

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and if anyone having any experience or expertise on the subject would be so kind as to share it that would be really nice :)

Does this mean you are moving without a job? Do you have savings that you will allow you to pay the rent for some time and your bills?

You are going to struggle to get any decent place to rent without references, rent paid in advance for 6 months or a guarantor. You can always find someone who will bypass the law and make a deal with you, but in this instance, you will most likely pay way too much for a place that is probably illegal to rent in the first place.

If you want cheap housing, wonderful countryside, easy access to the coast, good healthcare. Why not try Wales? You could also experience a very interesting culture at the same time, and learn a new language to keep the braincells moving.
  • For more specific ideas, would be helpful to know what your plans are (what you plan to do, what sort of experience you want, what sort of job you want or are you planning to study)?

Explore Websites like Rightmove to see what sort of properties they offer at what price and where.

Unfortunately from a website however (not until you see a flat) will you know whether its quiet or not. Generally a HMO (house of multiple occupation) with studios might not be as quiet as you want. There are exceptions but you won't know until you view them. You might have to compromise on that.

you talk about high rent and your willingness to take a small studio, both those comments imply your budget is limited. However, without knowing what you lifestyle will be: need to work, what sort of job, need to be near or far from "entertainment", your question is impossible to offer guidance on other than a very generic, live very far from London if you want cheap and live in the countryside if you want quiet.

If you don’t care where you are, and you could be miles from anywhere, and only need Internet, why move to the U.K. ? In what way would you benefit from being in the U.K.?
Fwiw you specify a studio but a house in some parts of the U.K. would be cheaper than a studio in others.

I may not be up to date with modern law, but I don't think it is illegal to rent a place without references, advance rent or a guarantor. All that is at the discretion of the landlord or their agent.
  • You need to be aware that tenants rights in England are some of the worst in the developed world. much worse than France.

You are only guaranteed the first six months of a tenancy, after which the landlord can tell you to leave at any time for any reason with only two months notice. You are not allowed to redecorate or do any alterations to the property without the landlord's permission. And usually you will not be permitted any pets or children unless you are renting a property intended for families.

There are plenty of places you can rent a spare room, as a lodger rather than a tenant.

You won't be alone alone, but its very possible to share a house and see very little of the other occupants. As parent to 4 young adults 17+ I know that for sure!

Its also much much cheaper and more flexible.

I would recommend finding somewhere in a city as that gives more options, and may be friendlier to non Brits.

As other posters have said it would help to know a bit more about you plans. The absence of information isnt helpful and frankly hints at some sort of trouble lurking
