Unwanted Gifts

Options
Hi all, I know it sounds ungrateful and I feel awful but I have some Xmas presents that I can't use and they are cluttering up my flat. A friend has told me I could take some back to the shop and get an exchange (even without a receipt), is this true? Other than it will be the charity shop.

How do I stop feeling guilty about it though? I do hint to these people what I like but I still get stuff I can't use from certain people. I would rather they just gave me money or vouchers.

It is unlikely you can return gifts without a receipt.
Even with a receipt it is down to company policy. Some do but thefe is no legal right to it.

    You have 3 choices

Sell them ie ebay or a local fb selling site
    Re gift them
    Charity shop
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

If it makes you feel any better, my unwanted gifts went to the charity shop on 28th December. Someone will love them and helps the charity too. To be fair, I didn't get many physical presents as I asked for donations to a charity instead because I really don't need anything and most did as I'd suggested. If it was up to me, wouldn't do adult presents at all.

PS. Worth a try asking the retailer to exchange for something else if that's what you'd rather do, quite a few will do this without a receipt if you say it was a gift, although if the item has gone into the sale, you'll only get an exchange for the sale price.

    Keep Smiling :)
  • Thanks all, I may have to bite the bullet and take them to the charity shop. I do feel guilty but there's no use hanging on to stuff I won't use. I might try returning some of the stuff though and see what happens, they can always say no.

Ive just taken a load of unwanted jumpers to the charity shop that have been cluttering up the house for years. The in laws keep buying OH these jumpers even though they aren’t to his taste and we’ve told them enough times, but they forget.

    A few ideas to deal with unwanted gifts;
    1) try and see if you can return the item - some shops will let you do so without a receipt, but others won’t. Be careful if the item is now in the sale as you’ll only get the sale price.
    2) donate to a charity shop. At least someone else may get good use out of the item.
    3) sell online eg eBay
    4) be blunt and ask for vouchers And say you are saving for a specific item.
    5) b even more blunt and given the item to the giver and ask them to exchange it. SIL used to buy my children clothes that were the wrong size (too small, because my children aren’t huge). Anyway, I started giving the items back and asked her to exchange, which of course she never did, but it meant said item was cluttering up her home and not mine.

I always ask people what they’d like. I know it removes the element of surprise, but I’d much rather get someone something they will enjoy, rather than wasting my money on something unwanted.
  • Some retailers will allow you to exchange your unwanted gifts without a receipt but that's purely a goodwill gesture and will probably only be for however much the item is being sold for now. Do you feel plucky enough to ask the givers for the receipts so that you can exchange the gifts for something else?

The brilliance of this tactic is in its simplicity. Kudos to you :T

If you donate to Age shops, you have a card to register your donation. Every now and again they send you an email to let you know how much your donation has sold for which is nice.

You are brave, Its usually May before I have the courage to take them to the charity shop, and then it's usually one in the next town.

Although the chocolates went into work last Friday!
