Cheapest of cheap carpet

We have a house purchase going through and I'm doing some forward planning. We know from the awful smell the old lady had dogs, and as she became ill she wasn't letting them out to do their business (the man selling it told us this as he did the viewings) and needless to say every bit of carpet, underlay etc needs ripping up as the smell is completely unbearable  and the cans of visible flea spray was the icing on the cake and we just can't clean them . It's concrete floor underneath. Thank god the bathroom and kitchen is tiled.
We are going to be doing extensive work in 12-15 months time, once we have plans drawn, passed etc etc so everything will be coming up again and we need cheapest of cheap floor covering. We don't care on colour, pattern etc, just something temporary as we are even debating cardboard boxes on the floor
but I'm determined to find something a bit better than that :T
Does anyone have any suggestions of bare bones cheap, even remnant ends seem to be expensive.

Try Freecycle for carpets0

Apart from the really horrible cord carpet, perhaps you could look on your local facebook buy & sell/free pages. I often see people selling remnants/used carpets & rugs quite cheaply0

Could you put a plea out on fb to ask friends and family if they have any remants or offcuts? We have just given a big offcut of our new bedroom carpet to a friend to put on their allotment which actually seemed like a bit of a waste but no idea what else we could do with it.
Failing that cheap rugs to cover bits of the floor?0 -
Look for carpet sellers who deal with landlords, you can get dirt cheap carpet from them for around £3 per square yard. Get an 8 or 10mm underlay and they aren't to bad. Google your area for them.

We've been looking and also on Gumtree, it's not helped by the fact my partner is allergic to cats/dogs/rabbits so we have to be careful where it has come from too which makes me seem really picky. The really horrible cord my end up being an option but it all seems to be £2.99+ a square metre.0

Thanks for the link I'll email them with room sizes etc and get some prices, it's a good starting point. Free delivery too and perhaps just get a local fitter.0 -
If you dont have terribly huge rooms, don't mind mis matched carpets, look at rememants in local carpet shop
We just turned the garage into a games room so didn't care what the carpet looked like and got a rememant to fit for £20 as apparently there was a fault and one line was off skew.( it's striped) We can't see it
Also have a bedroom and a large cupboard ( think box room size ) fitted with remnants for £10 and £40 respectively
If there were dogs with fleas, when the carpets come up, spray the edges of all the rooms with Indorex , really getting into the skirtings. Flea eggs lay dormant for ages0 -
Thinking about the fleas, I might simply paint the concrete with floor paint and just pop a few washable cotton mats or expendable bits of carpet in strategic places.0

I bought a 4x4m piece on eBay for very little, but in your position I'd probably do that in the living room, and then do as Dave suggested with the rest. Keep the dust down with some paint, and wear slippers.0

Think about odour having soaked into the concrete - i'd get the old carpets up and then see if the concrete needs any treatment before you cover it up!0
