Ceiling repair - over board ?

We have a badly cracked ceiling in a small bedroom (6 feet by 10 feet) - is it going to be best to over board it or fill it ?
Particularly around the "skilling" area - 3 feet wide !!
The cracks are full depth and up to 3 or 4 mm wide
What is the likely cost going to be ?

What type of ceiling? Is it Plasterboard,Lath & Plaster for example
What has caused the cracks, is it movement in the joists
Difficult to answer without more information as boarding over may cover the result but not cure the original problem.Thoughts:
