Save for emergency fund or buy new mattress

Options
Our expensive matress has gone mouldy and in reality I'd prefer to buy a new one.

I don't have any emergencyfund saved at all and oew my fiancee a lot of money already.

Should i put money away in Emergency Fund and try to manage 3 months to save £300+ or buy a new matress then save?

How would you do it

  • Choose the one that will help you to sleep better at night.

  • Just spoke to my fiancee about this and hes going to try and use run6ning alchohol to get rid of it and if not we'll see how mich we have between us and take it from there... :( just one thing after another

  • Why did your expensive mattress go mouldy? If there's a dampness problem, then won't a new one go the same way?

I'm guessing it can't be cleaned either...

If you are sure the problem won't recur, buy a new mattress; you can't take risks with your health.
  • Our bed was mine before we moved in together. We do have slats under the bed but my dad put 2 boards underneathe for support , we sweat so much in our sleep and only mouldy where the boards are so we'll take them off to create air .

  • Boards? As in air can no longer pass through?

    There's your problem.

Years ago when i was a kid my parents couldn't afford a new mattress and i complained my existing one was too soft.
My dad put a door under it. Perfect fit it was, only thing is it became so wet between the mattress and door because it just couldn't breathe.
  • I would spend on the mattress, as if you already had your emergency pot you would probably be now dipping into in to it to buy a mattress and then topping it back up.

If psychologically it makes you feel better you could always put 75% of any money saved towards a mattress and 25% to emergency pot so at least you are making a start on the pot.

The emergency pot would pay for the mattress anyway. That's the kind of thing you should be saving up for. Although you don't have the funds yet, just see the mattress as first item you are using the emergency fund for.

Then once that's done, you can rebuild your emergency fund.
  • Would those soft sponges that soak up fluids help, in that you could use one to wash the mattress with soap and warm water and then use the same sponge to wipe the mattress clean and leave it for a full day with windows open (I know it's very cold at the moment though) to dry. If you have a de-humidifier keep that in the room switched on throughout the process.

The thing is, even if you buy a new mattress that too will suffer the same fate! What you really need is to either remove the superfluous slats or, better still, invest in a new bed entirely.

have you had a very unortodox idea of buying a cheap mattress ?
I know, live dangerously and so on..
or even more extreme- a second hand one?
you sleep on mattresses others slept on in hotels and when staying at your friends, and sky does not fall
The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.

Do you put the sheet straight on to the mattress, or do you use a mattress cover?
The mattress cover and bed linen should be washed at least once a week.

A mattress cover helps to absorb sweat and skin particles, thus adding to the life of the mattress. It must be washed weekly for it to be effective.

Regularly opening windows or using a dehumidifier would help keep the moisture content down.

Consider buying a divan base for your new mattress.
