Post Office send cheque to wrong bank

I bank with ThinkMoney and cheques can be paid in via the post office. Initially my local post office said I had to go to a main branch to pay the cheque in. I spoke with ThinkMoney who told me this was incorrect and that they would pass feedback to the post office in question. The next day the cheque was taken. A week or so pass and the cheque has still not reached my account. I contact ThinkMoney who say they haven't received the cheque and ask me for the receipt the post office gave me. It transpires that the post office sent the cheque to RBS. 6 weeks later ThinkMoney finally tell me to contact the cheque issuer to get it cancelled and resent after telling me they needed to wait for it to come through from RBS. I contacted RBS myself who eventually tell me that if they had received the cheque it would have been destroyed as its not for an account held with them ....... I am soooooo angry that it has taken this amount of time to be told I need to get another cheque!!! I can't believe that RBS would just destroy a cheque even if they had the account number and sort code, surely they could have forwarded it onto ThinkMoney? Who can I complain to about this poor service initially with the post office - but I do think ThinkMoney should be held accountable too

  • .........But your local post office DID tell you thay they could not accept it.

Could you not move the money via faster payments?
Will you send the next cheque directly to the bank where the account is?

It sounds like the Post Office sent the cheque off in the RBS envelope, not the Think Money envelope. The Think Money website implies the cheque will still be credited to your account, but it will take longer:

Just take your cheque to the cashier and ask for a yellow thinkmoney paying in envelope. You shouldn't use the blue and white RBS envelopes available at the Post Office as this will add extra time for your cheque to clear.

If your local Post Office doesn't have any yellow thinkmoney envelopes available, we will send you some. Just mention this to a Money Manager the next time you call.
