Dental insurance / plan or just save my money?

Hi all,
is dental insurance worth paying for? How does it compare to so called dental plans - if they are any different at all? Are they worth it?
My dentist informed me he is going over to a dental plan system. It seems all his patients are expected to sign up. I have been with him for over 20 years, initially on NHS & then privately - I pay for all my treatments. In the last 5 years I've had 8 visits' mostly routine check-ups + some minor repairs. I've paid just over £200 for all 8 treatments; so averaging £25 each / £20 a year.
The new plan will be £150 per year = £750 over next 5 years. This is a 375% increase! This includes one free exam check-up & 1 hygiene + 2 x-rays. Other work I still have to pay for! Fillings are £90 upwards, crowns at £550 up.. If I had a small filling a year I'm looking at a 5 years cost of £1250 minimum... If I add one crown it'll be £1800...
I'm no spring chicken, I guess I can expect more dental visits as me & my teeth age but this dental plan doesn't look good value to me. I feel like my dentist is trying to get rid of me!
Should I instead, put my money in a savings account & only fork out if needed?

Private dentistry's a racket. Try and find a new NHS dentist.

£150 for one appt check-up and one hygienist appt?? XRays are only taken if necessary, they shouldn't need to be taken every year as routine.
