paying stamp duty via CC

So it seems it is possible to pay stamp duty via CC ..

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/pay-stamp-duty-land-tax#by-debit-or-credit-card-online

however it will no longer be able to do this after Jan 18 2018
I am looking to complete by end of Jan, so dont think ill have a UTRN to pay before then. I will need to pay £25k so the only way i will be able to afford the house i am interested in if i can use the cc to pay stamp duty.

I have never bought before so can anyone with experience please advise if there are ways around this Jan 18 limit to pay the SDLT with CC ?

Thanks

  • If you need a mortgage then I believe you will need to have the funds to pay the SDLT in place with your solicitors before completion. So you won't be able to pay the SDLT on a credit card (unless you can get a cash advance and pray the lender doesn't perform a last minute credit check).

You have entered this in the mortgage section, so presumably you are buying with a mortgage?

If you are, SDLT has to be paid to your solicitor with the balance of the completion funds ahead of completion, so what you are planning is unlikely to be possible either way as you won't be paying HMRC yourself.

    Speak to your solicitor.

You do. Accept a recommendation, or find your own.

    Either way, it's your decision.

If you are FTB who hasn't even applied for a mortgage yet, I think we can guarantee that you won't have completed your purchase by 18 January! You may wish to get a more realistic idea of timescales if there is some importance to completing the purchase that rapidly.

Then keep saving. Liitle point in over stretching yourself financially. For what is the most important single purchase in your life. Buying the property is only the first step. With ownership comes other costs.

I suspect some people are confuzzled having have had one too many sherries over this festive season. But enjoy, as it only comes once a year!
