What are the metal hooks on corners of houses

totally random, but what are the metal hooks (almost like a hanging basket hook) on the corners of houses, top row of bricks between the bricks and the roof?
Noticed it on my extension the other day, and now see them everywhere.

Used with traditional hipped (georgian style) roofs on the corner of the hip. Screwed to rafter and embedded in mortar at base of hip to prevent ridge tiles from slipping off0 -
They are to stop the ridge tiles sliding down the roof.0
