How much gas would you think reasonable to heat a 4 bed house to 19c all day (14 hours). I have used 9 units so far today which is about 100kwh.
4kWp, South facing, 16 x phono solar panels, Solis inverter, Lincolnshire.

Dunno, just keep as warm as we want, don't worry about cost, would rather be comfy than cold and saving.

    Doesn't sound unreasonable.

    Boiler 90% efficient, 100kwh => 90kwh of useful heat.
    90kwh / 14 hours = 6.4kw.

So split that across 6 rooms, only just over 1kw per room.

    Hi

If you took average UK household gas consumption to now be around 12MWh/year ((L)8-(M)12-(H)-17) then 100kWh on a day like today would look around average .... however, for highly insulated energy efficient properties even 8MWh/year looks high for space & DHW heating ....

Probably best to calculate annual heating demand on a kWh/sqm/year basis ... under 100 is starting to become acceptable, but at that point there's plenty to be done ... at the other end of the scale there's passivhaus at 15kWh/sqm/year, but in achieving 2-3x this you'd be doing pretty well.

  • I keep a spreadsheet of what I use. I live in a 4 bed house but only put the thermostat upto 12 degrees and leave the heating on all day.

When its just me in the house I use 1.5 units of gas a day (about 17 KwH), but when my friend stayed for the week and moaned it was cold, thus me putting the thermostat upto 20 degrees the usage went up to 4.5 units a day (about 50 kwh a day)

My rule of thumb for our 3 brm. bungalow under Winter conditions is 10 litres of oil per day i.e. 100kWh gross or around 85 kWh net. That's for all day heating (retired couple).
  • In general we use 100kw a day in normal winter conditions, goes up to 130kw a day when temperatures are -3 overnight and +3/4 during the day.

The house is 20 during the day and 21 in the evenings.

Heating is on for 16 hours a day on a 5 bed house.

Take a look at http://www.degreedays.net/. You can use this to access your kw usage verses the actual outside air-temperature data.

Is the sqm based on the property actual floor area?

    Hi

Yes, all 'living' area inside the envelope of the building which you would normally expect to be heated ... so excluding integral garages, loft spaces (unconverted!) etc ...

I can only get 69, based on 20000kw and 280 sqm.

Using degreedays I am always in winter 12kw per degree.
