working tax credit over-payment

Hello,
received letter from hmrc saying 241 working tax credit overpayment. Wrote back saying keep all my financial records and could not see anything relating to wtc and I had received two large tax rebates last two years; if I owed anything why did not deduct? (thought it was a scam letter).
Now received another - I have looked into your tax credit claim for the year ending 05/04/2006 and the balance 241 is still o/s.
I only keep bank statements etc for six years, how do they expect me to see if this is correct? + every time I have ever tried to claim any benefits, I have always been declined + from my memory, I was working full time in a well paid job for a well known insurance company during 2005/6.
How should I deal with this? any comments appreciated.

WTC overpayments wouldn’t be deducted from tax rebates.
Call them and ask them for copies of the awards notices from that time or make a subject access request.0 -
