Phone damaged by repair shop

Hi, I recently managed to break the screen on my mobile phone. Having bought it second-hand I didn't have a warranty on it so chose to get it repaired at a local shop that, from what I seen online, had good reviews. I was in a little rush yesterday when picking it up. I was driving acoss the country so was a littlebpushed for time. I didn't get a chance to inspect the phone until an hour after collecting it. I noticed that the battery cover was quite badly damaged. I phoned up the shop who said that there was no other way to remove it. A little research online showed me that wasn't true. And said I would come in to see them.

My question is where do I stand as i wasn't made aware that my phone would be damaged by them changing screens. Are they liable to fix it?

My experience is that most of this little shops dont even give you a reciept so its hard to prove that you actually used their services. In addition anyone with no training can set one up so they would probably say that they used the only method they knew how to use and have been successful at using, My suggestion would be inform them of damage and ask for compensation if they refuse then you can report them to the local trading standards.
