Re google home mini

Hi Guys, I have been given a google home mini for Xmas.
Some thing I need like a hole in the head.
It says an android os item is required?
That,s on the outside of yet, unopened box.no more instructions, without opening.
I don,t want to open it, unless I can use it.
Can someone please explain how they work, and why do I need an android os?
No smart stuff in my house, including me:rotfl:
Nothing else in my house is comparable.
Don,t want to offend the Son, as he gave it to me:(
Any advice would be grateful:beer:

  • To use Google Home device you need to have a home WiFi network. If you don't then it's no use to you.
To setup and manage the device, you need the app called "Google Home" - this runs on Android phones and tablets. If you don't have either of these then you can't use the app.

On it's own, out of the box, Google Home Mini does nothing for you without the preceeding items.
  • google home app is also on ios. i am assuming you have a internet connection otherwise you son wouldn't have gave it you.

worth holding on to if only just to ask the weather, news or stream radio until you get smart heating, lights, kettle etc

Thanks for replies, still a bit confused.
Seems the answers conflict, or it,s probably me, more likely.
As a stand alone, without anything android, I can, or, cannot use it? Cannot plug and play??
I have an I pad.which is not android!
    That,s iOS, isn’t,t it?
    I have WiFi, also,and just had a new kindle 7 , which is , I think android?
Don,t know if google app is on it?
    If it is?
What does the app allow me to do with my kindle?
Sorry if I,m confused, but it either works stand alone, even just to ask the weather, or it doesn,t!
    EDIT.
iPad has google home app on it, reviews say it keeps crashing.
Don, t know if it,s free?

Plug in your GH and follow the simple instructions.
    The Home app is Free.
How do you have an iPad with no idea of what it does?;)

I can't remember if it says anything inside, I didn't read any of it. Set up was that simple.
    Have a read through THIS.
It may help and stop you having to ask too many questions on here, as that can be confusing in itself...:)

That's probably inside, don't forget, it's ........ confusing as you seem to use a comma as a comma AND as an apostrophe!
