VPN and Plusnet router

Hi, I have recently changed from Sky to Plusnet for unlimited fibre broadband and line rental. I have been thinking of using a VPN, I dont know much about the technology, just the idea of better internet security etc.

I was looking at a VPN provider NordVPN ? has anyone used a Plusnet One router with Nord and is it easy to install, I use a desktop PC, iPad, iPhone and smart TV with Amazon firestick

Amy views greatly appreciated

NordVPN is one of the better VPNs available.
Some online streaming services are blocking connections via VPN (to prevent piracy).
Check up speeds (some VPNs will really slow down the connection speed) and if there is a limited amount of data per day/month.

Why do you think a VPN will make your browsing any more secure?

What do you do on the net that needs to be more secure?

    I am with plusnet.

Use PIA and that has been bulletproof for the last 2 years since I went over to windows 10.

It was 99% with windows 8 due to occasional cutouts.

I too was with plusnet, PIA and windows 10. I found PIA kept loosing connection many times a day sometimes minutes apart, but my non-vpn pc and phone were fine. Especially bad when using torrents. I would say 10 reconnections a day was not uncommon.

I have gone to windscribe. They are cheaper £40 unlimited days, but after 10 years you have to email then and re-license for free. The vpn link is somewhat slower, torrents two thirds of the speed, just not as snappy, but much more stable, more countries (meh) but overall it is a win.

I still have 4 months of PIA left but do no longer use their service.

Thread resurrection but might be useful for someone.

According to blurb from NordVPN the new and recommended IKEv2/IPsec version provides more options for router configuration than older versions. However I have it on my MacBook Air but I don't see any way to add it to any router. Perhaps an email to NordVPN would produce a result.

Incidentally on Apple Mac at least the IKE version has to be bought from iTunes and is more expensive - £76/year at the current price. However according to NordVPN it provides greater security.

The page I link to was dated June 27 2016 so could be outdated:

I have plusnet and NORD, the VPN is software based and installed on the device you are using, not the router. I haven't looked to see if there is a VPN option on the router control panel because I am happy for it to be device specific. I don't want NowTV or any banking interactions going through the VPN.

Not true: While NordVPN can be set up with an application it can also be set up manually and NordVPN provides tutorials for this covering Operating systems, various protocols and various devices:

However looking at the instructions for Mac and IKEv2/IPsec I prefer the application with its automatic setup :)

I'm pretty sure you cant install vpn on the plusnet router itself.

You can get a better quality third party router but even then they often dont let you install vpn on the router, you have to change the router firmware to a third party one (which the manufacturer allow you to do) and you can then install the vpn directly on the router.

I have 80/20 fibre that normally runs 72/18 and that isn't slowed down by NordVPN.
You'll find that some sites won't play ball when accessed through NordVPN so I'd advise taking the simple option of running it on your device(s) because you can then easily disable it on just one device and leave any others still running it - e.g. on a Fire TV running Kodi. In the main I don't use it on PCs anyway but those running torrents on PCs may well want to use it.
