Looking for a decent carpet cleaner

Options
Having seen the price of Rug Doctor hire, I was thinking of biting the bullet and getting my own machine - except the actual Rug Doctor one I looked at is £300!
Can anyone recommend a (somewhat cheaper) machine?
I live in a muddy rural location with a border collie coming and going so I need a serious machine and not something that just 'freshens up' the carpet.
Cheers

  • What type of carpet are you cleaning? (Wool, nylon etc). VAX carpet cleaners are fairly good with the commercial range being even better. They have a MSE sale every so often posted on here with some big savings.

We offer a professional carpet cleaning service at work and our teams use ProChem machines. These machines don’t have a built in brush bar and require you to skim the carpet with a buffer and a pad before spraying and extracting. Another good brand is taski however this is aimed at the commercial market.

In all fairness rug doctors are ok machines and do a fairly good job, however if you are cleaning a wool carpet for example then you will want a spray and extraction wand only. Rug Doctors only have an upholstery attachment.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks

I bought a bissel from Costco think it was about £100. I really like it and it keeps the clean water separate from the dirty water it sucks back out.

    Thanks folks.
I had a look at some on Amazon but complaints with the cheapies seem to be that they don't extract enough water and the actual cleaning isn't that good.
I have a mix of large rugs downstairs - mostly synthetic and one wool mix. Bedroom and stairs are synthetic. All are short pile.
  • I use a Vax W90-RU-B Rapide Ultra which recently lifted out a set in oil stain with two slow passes. I also use this carpet shampoo which lasts for ages.
  • I bought a gas domestic model in 2014. Replaced under warranty after 2 hours use. Second machine replaced under warranty after about four weeks! Tools hose replaced after about 2 years!!
    Tells it's own story.
However when working performs very well. Cleans well and suck up plenty of moisture so carpets quite quick to dry and convenient to use. If it is still available make sure you get the six year warranty. If anything goes wrong (apart from tools) it seems you just get a new machine sent to you......
