Thanks everyone for your helpful replies.

To answer a few of the questions:

The model I ordered was Dell Latitude E6220 Laptop, HDMI, Widescreen i5, 4GB RAM, Wireless, 1 Year Warranty
    - Operating System (Windows Version): Windows 10
    at a cost of £170

    Yes the website is indeed:
cheaplaptopcompany (sorry I can't post links)

With regards to expecting a working battery and not expecting a working battery with disclaimers, this is what the site says:

Batteries are tested to confirm that the accept a charge, however there is no guarantee how long the battery will last for. Batteries are a consumable item and will need to be replaced from time to time depending on use. In some occasions batteries will be untested but this will be mentioned on the product page.

There was no mention of this particular product having an untested battery.

Another quote from the website is as follows:

We do the refurbishing, we are not a third party seller like other companies. Therefore we have all the technological expertise to make sure that the product we sell is of the highest of standard.

I'll see where I get with them if I can get a replacement battery from them or elsewhere.

Thanks again everyone for your help.

    Kind Regards,

    cxkev

Given that disclaimer I would say they should change the battery. However I would not expect a decent one so there is probably no reason to bother and you should have expected to buy a battery if you wanted to use it without power.

You say that the laptop took weeks to deliver?
I wonder if it's possible for the battery at the time of test, to have been at the stage where it was 'ok' at the time, but by the time it got to you, it packed in?

Which is irrelevant, all that matters is that it did not work when the customer first had the opportunity to use it (nor did it last a reasonable length of time).

cxkev, please refer to the advice in the first few posts and file a dispute with PayPal.

Out of interest, what would you consider to be a 'reasonable' length of time?
