Word and Excel not responding

I have an Acer Aspire 5542 with Windows 10 still using Office XP Professional. Recently Word and Excel would not allow me to change fonts or colours and when I try to save I get the message they are not responding and I have to force close.
I saw a previous thread where it was suggested to do a system restore or change the default printer. When I went to do the system restore all previous restore points seem to have disappeared and when I try to print I get the not responding message when I try to change the default printer.
I would appreciate any suggestions.

if it was my laptop i would buy office 2016 from ebay (activation key <£5). uninstall your old office, restart and download/install new office"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

Are you running Norton, Kaspersky or similar resource gobbling anti-virus?0 -
No I've only got Windows Defender and Malwarebytes so nothing that takes a lot of resources and I'm only using less than a third of the hard drive.
Being a cautious type I hadn't considered buying any of the newer Office programmes off ebay as I couldn't believe they were genuine at that price and until now Office XP has functioned OK.
I'm not sure what I may have altered (other than yet another Windows update changing settings) but at present I am able to print off existing documents which is progress.0 -
So, I don't think there is a fix,
As Microsoft recently updated the requirements for running Microsoft Office on the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Office 2007 is no longer certified compatible. And I believe that Office XP was not certified compatible with Windows 10 before this update.
Try running in office compatibility mode ( google "windows 10 compatibility mode" to find out how)
But in the long run, try Office Online or Google doc or Open office if you don't want to pay for new software. (you could get office from your employer if they are large enough though the 'microsoft employee purchase' program for less than £10)0 -

i paid £4.60 ish on ebay for office 2016 a couple of months ago. the activation code and links were emailed within minutes. you download office from microsoft website and activate with code."The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0 -
Many thanks for suggestions. As it looks as though Office XP has finally expired I'll temporarily have a go with Open Office or Libre Office and then perhaps have a go on ebay with purchasing Office 2016.
I'm retired now and don't have access to a new Office via work any more but do still use it for a couple of groups I am treasurer for.0 -
Will Office online (free) do what you need? Doesn't have all the features of paid Office but still fairly comprehensive.0

My office 2004 still works with W10 but it sounds like it will be dead soon too. Its a shame perfectly good software is killed like this.
