have you check used from gumtree or freecycle? there might be some unwanted free one.

new oem optical drive should cost about £13@ amazon, those 2 seems expensive.

It's the same drive but PCWorld is attempting to make it look like a better model to get people to spend more money. Delivery would make the price pretty similar though.

You would probably be better off getting either a BluRay burner or BluRay drive ie reader which can also burn DVD's.

Those options would cost more but provide extra features which you do not get with a DVD rewriter. Another option might be to purchase a IDE DVD writer and get a cheap £2-£3 SATA to IDE converter which plugs into the back of the drive and converters to SATA. Those drives are old now ie eBay used and should cost very little. A good drive, one of the best DVD burners was the BenQ DW1640. Very difficult to get now because they were much sort after. However with the move to SATA they might be still available on ebay.

BTW I have 2 of them and will not sell them. ;)

Liteon do make some of the best optical drives, they purchased the BenQ optical drive business. Their BluRay writers are very good. I have one myself and a Pioneer Bluray writer but the liteon is much better.

    Thank you everyone
Spending my time reading how to fix PC's,instead of looking at Facebook.
  • BTW I forgot to mention that Liteon drives and drives based upon Liteon tech and some LG drives are the only drives that can/could do error checking of disks. That was some time back so things might of changed but I doubt it.

With Liteon drives you can do disk scans of burns to check the burn and disk quality using OptiDriveControl. Cheaper disks and fast write speeds tend to produce low quality burns with high errors. The trick is to find a source of low priced but high quality disks. Some forums can give their experiences with burning different disk makes and their disk ID's.
