Amp speakers and how to

Hi All,

I want to have 6 speakers in my ceiling connected to an amplifier. I bought the speaker which has two sort of connections if that makes sense which has confused me as to how i can wire them. Also what amp would do for it.

Ive looked at these, if the amp is no good can you suggest one around 100 quod mark? Cheers

Speakers

6 x E-Audio Sinlge Stereo Ceiling Speaker With Dual Tweeters
1 x Pyle PCAU46A 2 x 120 Watt Stereo Mini Power Amplifier USB/SD AUX Player & Remote

Im an electrician by trade but have never wired speakers so although i have an idea on wiring am not sure about the way to wire and all thr watts etc

Cheers

  • Six? Are you planning three left channel and three right, or some kind of non-standard 'surround' sound?

2.5mm t&e is adequate for pretty much any domestic speaker install, and every bit as good as the fancy stuff hifi shops sell.

  • They are dual coil speakers so one pair of terminals is for Left and the other pair is for Right, from a stereo amplifier.

They are 8 ohm impedance and the amplifier is rated for 4 ohm output, so three in parallel will be 2.7 ohms which runs a risk of overloading your amplifier.

Four speakers, 2 connected only as Left, and 2 connected only as Right, would be okay off that amplifier.

If you want 3 or more speakers connected to one amplifier you'll need an amp which will drive below 2 ohms, which most domestic ones won't, or go for 100V Line which will supply any number of speakers, but audio quality is usually limited and the amps are usually mono.

Selector switch which can keep the load at 8 ohms. Example. https://www.maplin.co.uk/p/4-way-stereo-speaker-switch-box-n99kt

Connecting more speakers increases the load on the amp. Speaker loads are measured in ohms. Confusingly, less ohms are harder to drive than more ohms.
  • Not sure at all axcel why you chose those speakers.

Owain's advice re connection is good but I wonder what you are trying to achieve, like onomatopoeia ?

If you just want to fill a room with sound then three stereo amps of the not too expensive variety that will drive a four ohm load each would do the trick. Three of those Lely lp2024+ ones might be adequate. No comment on their value for money! That is if you only connect one pair of contacts on each speaker or more amps if you connect 'left' and 'right' .....but....

You might find it was very acceptable for you but would not be hifi quality or give a proper stereo image owing to speaker design an lack of speaker cabinet. Ok for just a party, a bit of background music or PA probably.

Single speakers (for left and right positions each -thus usually just one set of connections each) would be a better move and multiples of those if you wish!

It really depends what you're trying to achieve.......
  • Hi i choose them because they where cheap as chips 😂

What im trying to achive really is in my new house i was 2 x speakers in living room, 1 x in hall, 3 x in kitchen diner utility.

These will be connected to my samsung galaxy tab which im going to mount in the wall with an aux. And then a aux splitter to my amazon echo.

The idea then is for all the speakers to play the same music that i select on my tablet or the echo. Really its just fot abit of background music and every now and then crank the volume up a little.

But if i was having a party say, id set the bose up to play the music as it has a sub etc.

So really i just want a amp that can play all 6 speakers at once if this isnpossible

If it is any chance of a name of one that will work and a description on how to wire

    Appreciate it

Christ. Obviously neither qualified or competent if that is the case.

Okay, if the speakers are cheap as chips buy another pair. That gives you 8 or, wired as only left or right, 4 on each channel.

On each channel wire 4 speakers in series-parallel which will present 8 ohms to the amplifier.

The next problem is that you should not combine the outputs from two devices into one input using an aux splitter cable. This will result in the output of the tablet feeding into the output of the echo and vice versa, and the output of one will shunt the other. Those splitter cables are intended for one output to two inputs.

Welllllll that's abit rude, do you enjoy being a keyboard warrior? O_O!

For starters speaker wiring is not part of the level 3 NVQ to become an electrician, and with never wiring houses or speaker system kinda makes sense I have never wired a speaker system??

I can wire the !!!! out of lights and sockets though, youd prob spunk your self watching the skills these hands have!

and to everyone else haha thanks a lot for your help and advice I think I'm changing my mind.

I think I'm going to go for an AMP and 4 of them speakers upstairs. 1 in master bedroom, 1 in ensuite, 1 in bathroom and 1 upstairs hallway.

    so just using 4

then I have found these for downstairs, can two zone them also so I could separate my front room of for the rest and put a switch in OR a volume control so can isolate the front room. What are your thoughts? Again its just for background music nothing special.

Cheers again for all the help
  • That is the way to go, if you can return your existing speakers it would be better to use 100V all the way BUT audio quality will be compromised unless you use more expensive 'music' rated speaker transformers.

Bear in mind that with that 60 watt amp you should not use 10 x 6 watt speakers - there should always be at least 10% amp power in reserve, so a couple of speakers will have to have a lower transformer tap.

    https://geoffthegreygeek.com/understanding-distributed-speaker-systems/

For volume controls use multitap attenuators eg
    https://www.cybermarket.co.uk/shop/public-address/100v-line-volume-controls.html

These fit between the 100 V feed from the amp and the 100 V supply to the speaker transformer.
