If you had the ignition switch turned on when you did the continuity test and had your multimeter on ohms or continuity chances are you killed your multimeter.
Whilst it is common for there to be an earth fault or a fault in the rear light cluster you have to be extremely unlucky to have both go. Given that it's highly unlikely that the car will develop two independent faults with the same symptom at the same time, that suggests that there's either something wrong with what you're doing or something wrong with what you're telling us.0
