Anyone know what past inherency amount with no will was?

Hi,
We were just chatting and someone came up with something interesting that could help someone. In the 1980’s does anyone know what the inherency law was if you died without a will?
I know now it’s £250,000 to spouse then he/she has half of what’s left and then the rest goes between kids . Was it the same in 1985?

The rules were changed as were the amounts but I have not tracked down any more detail.. AFAIK it is too late to do anything about anyway due it being more than twelve years ago but I am happy to be corrected.Hi,

I’m struggling to find the amount on google too and website with all the laws ( so confusing).
Normally it wouldn’t matter as too late , I agree, but in this case it would as it reflects on something new being looked into .If you don’t like a thread or post just move on by.

You may be confusing intestacy (dying without a Will) and Inheritance Tax (IHT).
IHT is not directly affected by whether there was a Will or not.
IHT rates are here
For intestacy, start at s.46 Administration of Estates Act 1925 and Schedule 1A as amended occasionally which set the "fixed net sum".A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -

I am not confusing the two things. AIUI the OP is asking what the values upon intestacy were in the 1980s. I have failed to find those.0

All I can find is that for deaths prior to 1st February 2009 what is called the statutory legacy was £125,000 compared with now at £250,000. Clearly it needs to be index linked and is overdue for revising.I don't plan to do any more Googling on the subject but you could try yourself if Xmas is getting boring! Is there any chance that you could let me know when you know please? I believe the Administration of Estates Act 1925 applied at that time.

It also mentions that when the surviving spouse dies that that could make a difference to the children. It’s very complicated case but this helps hugely.
Thanks so much xIf you don’t like a thread or post just move on by.
