Brilliant entry, any more contestants for 'worst advice given 2017'? Contest ends in 7 days!!!

I've done it often. I, you see, am very employable. It may not be the same for anyone who isn't employable, but I don't see why you assume the OP isn't, just because you are not.

  • I've had this in retail before. I've left retail completely as I hated always being given more work than my job descriptions, not getting the promotions (I'm not fantastic at force-selling customers clothes they aren't interested in) but then having to train the new supervisors. 2 of who couldn't understand why I didn't get the job when I'd been there 5 years and knew the place inside out. I think companies do this purposely so they have staff trained really well but then keep them from progressing so they don't have to pay them more.
I'd start looking for a new job. I never took out my frustrations on the new supervisors, I always helped because I am a nice person and it was a tough company (and an awful manager) to work for. So I'd just be pleasant to the newcomer while planning your escape!

Yes, I'm sure you are... But the reality is it reduces your negotiating power.
  • Whilst I feel for the OP I also feel for the successful candidate.

Nothing like going into a new job and feeling the vibes of resentment from everyone.

I’m not saying the OP or the team will be like this but having been in the successful candidates shoes it wasn’t a pleasant experience

OP have you asked the managers for detailed feedback on your application and interview ? They wouldn't/shouldn't compare you with the successful applicant but they could give you a helpful insight to the areas you were 'weaker' in.

I once was in a position where we had someone who was acting up in a managers position (with appropriate additional pay). As we were obliged to advertise externally we did so and held interviews.

The person who was in position gave an absolutely terrible interview. They acted like the job was theirs already. It was very clear that whilst they had done the job well they could go no further with it so we appointed someone else.

Having reread the OP, there is nothing there which states that he/she was told that the jobs was theirs. Terms and phrases have been used which can be take to imply that. The OP may have been 'led to believe that the interview was a formality', and maybe came across as too relaxed, or possibly even complacent at interview.
Either way, I'm not sure if the OP will feel comfortable staying with the company and hoping another opportunity comes along, or whether they will feel that they can not trust anything senior management say in future.
If they decide to stay, they have to accept that it is not the fault of the new post holder.
